National Honor Society
National Honor Society is a national organization that recognizes students for excellence in academics and character. NHS funds scholarship opportunities and often elevates a student's resume during various application processes. NHS is open to Sophomore - Senior students who meet the following criteria:
- a cumulative, unweighted G.P.A. of at least a 3.0 with no failing grades
- no serious disciplinary or academic integrity issues or incidents
- approval by a 4-5 member faculty council comprised of teachers and one administrator
- willingness to meet the requirements of club duties and responsibilities laid out by RBV-ASB and the club advisor
At the beginning of each semester, a 2-3 week window will open for student to apply for admittance to NHS. This window of time will be run in the school bulletin during this period. Candidates transcripts and disciplinary file, if applicable, will be reviewed by the Faculty Council to see if the candidate meets the requirements for membership. Once notified of acceptance, student will complete a Candidate Information Form that documents other clubs, community service, and volunteer commitments students have in order to fully show the NHS tenet of more than just academic excellence. This form will be revisited each year as members continue with NHS. Once membership is determined, elections will be held for the officer positions of President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer with the faculty advisor functioning in a supporting role only. The club will meet monthly, on a day and time determined by the club and advisor, and complete community service activities on and around the campus. Annual club dues of $20 per student offset the annual fee of $385 to the National Honor Society Organization in order to keep the club charter at Rancho Buena Vista High School and to purchase the Honor Cords that NHS graduating seniors wear at commencement.
The membership window opens the first 2-3 weeks of each semester, and the Faculty Council will meet each semester to review all applicants and possibly admit new members. Existing member's transcripts will be reviewed each semester to ensure that the basic requirements for membership are still in effect. If an existing member's status becomes imperiled due to grades or possible character issues, that member will be placed on a one semester probation to resolve the issue. These cases are rare, and are handled on a case by case basis.
In order for NHS to stay in contact with each other, an NHS Remind account has been created. Members are encouraged to join so that updates and information that cannot wait for the monthly meeting can be sent out to all. The NHS Remind code is as follows:
